POLICE DEPARTMENT |
|
The Waverly Police Department is a progressive department serving the citizens and businesses of Waverly. There are ongoing programs for improving the community such as involvement in the National Child Safety Council, and Drug & Alcohol awareness programs for students. For information about these and other programs, contact the Police Department. The current Chief of Police is Larry D. Roe. Roe took over as chief on October 15, 2001, upon the retirement of Chief Michael Corwin. Robert F. Long is the Assistant Chief of Police. The Department currently operates with 13 full-time officers, 5 part time officers, 4 full time and one part time dispatcher. There is also an auxiliary department of 25 officers. There is 911 service operating at the department 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The department also has a K-9; "Berry" whom is certified in drug detection, search, and suspect apprehension. There are two full time detectives, Lt. Sheldon "Ray" Newman and Sgt. Charles S. Reader. Lt. Newman is also the department instructor and handles the K-9. Since October the department has undergone many changes. The remodeling of the police building is nearly complete. Bricking of the outside of the building was completed in March. The inside of the building is nearly completed as well. There has been an addition of three new offices; a new classroom, evidence and records room, and an inside wash bay. These improvements will enable operation to be much more efficient. The inside work has been with minimal use of outside labor which resulted in significant savings to the City and thus to the tax payers as well. The work is expected to be completed by the end of May. There was also a donation from the First National Bank in the amount of $3000.00 to get the project under way. The City is very grateful to Mr. Bob Foster and the First National Bank. In the near future, officers of the department will also have a new look. There are plans to have new department uniforms by fall 2002. The new uniforms will be a mix of black/gray. The campaign style hat will replace the current eight-point hat used. It is Chief Roe's belief that public perception is very important, and that these changes will greatly improve the department's image and will create officer pride and morale. There are plans for an open house in June. |
